

Middleton Cheyne to Chipping Warden

Middleton Cheney is some 2 miles East of Junction 11 on M40. Facing the front of All Saints Church the route takes the lane to the
left. Pass the right hand turn – Rectory Lane. At the T-junction (opposite a
house named Stoneleigh) turn right into Glovers Lane.

At the end of the lane the pathway crosses the main road and takes the unmade vehicle track to the right of the ‘footpath’ sign passing between the
gardens of domestic properties. After approximately 300 hundred yards the track
becomes a footpath and ends at a ‘kissing’ gate into grazing land.

Go L and go with hedge L, follow
round field edge to find stile. Take stile and go ahead with hedge L to exit by
stile to road.

Cross road to drive and after 10 paces take stile
R, signpost marked ‘Footpath to Thenford’.

L to come to field corner with dilapidated stone barn. Take stile L to
stone bridge. Cross bridge and go R with fence R to gateway.

on L side of road before bend.
(W25) Make way through buildings and passageway / alleyway with fence L, over stile, continue with fence L to stile. Take stile into spinney. Go through spinney to field. Ahead across centre of large field to fence, take stile adjacent to large oak tree. Go 1/2 L, pass duck pond, to exit by far left corner gate. Go R keeping fence R for approx 200 paces to metal gate in fence. (Do not enter this gate).

1/4 L from gate with fence R
to mid fence stile and 2nd stile into field, continue with R fence /
hedge through gate to road. Turn R 20 paces on road, then go L take gate, and
ahead to pass behind cattle sheds. Go with field edge L to end of field, R and L
through gate, and go with hedge R.

Go ahead over field to mid fence gate, turn R, pass dew pond R through small
gate and follow grassy corridor with hedges L and R. Path swings R to gate with
hedge R. Continue ahead down through avenue of trees and fields to road.

driveway. Take stile immediately R, go across field to corner stile. Over stile

then L through gate along line of power lines to far side of field.

Priors
Marston to Long Itchington

Priors Marston war memorial stands at the junction of a number of roads.
Standing at the end of Hellidon Road, turn right and then take the right hand
fork for Lower Shuckburgh and Napton. Continue on Shuckburgh Road, passing a
phone box, and the ends of School Lane and Vicarage Lane on your right.

After a further 100m, locate a
pillar-box on the left. Immediately before the pillar-box, turn left and
follow the waymark down a made up track,
alongside Priors Hall. At the end of the track, cross the stile and bear 1/2 R to pass along the rear boundaries
of houses to exit by stile.

Pass through two pony paddocks by
stiles.
On entering a larger field, cut across the near left hand corner, by stile, to reach
timber bridge ditch crossing. Cross the ditch and bear 1/4 right. The next
stile is visible beneath a line of trees.

find corner stile. Take stile and cross ditch / bridge, and go L on turf
track bordered by line trees with hedge and ditch L.

steel gate and turn right following the way between lines of trees. The path

the field on the left. Continue ahead.

The path descends, passing through two steel gates in quick

the field towards the village of Napton just visible through the trees. On the far
side of the field is a full width gate. Go through the gate, and head down

this field with the fence immediately on your right. Notice a farm appearing, a few hundred metres off to the left.

minor road.

verge adjoining the minor road. Note the right-angle bend in the road:
take the right-hand-most direction, which is in effect continuing in the same
direction as the path you have just left.

reach a junction where the major road from ahead swings around a corner and
passes away to your left. Take this left hand turn (Holt Road): it is
signposted back to your starting point of Priors Marston, but this need not be a
matter of concern.

come upon a bridge over the Oxford canal. Cross bridge and turn right to
drop down on to the towpath, go with canal right - ahead is Napton on the Hill with its high set windmill. Follow
down a flight of locks, and pass The Folly Inn on your left. Continue on the
towpath. Skirt around Napton Hill on the towpath. At bridge 111 pass under
the A425 Southam to Daventry road with the Bridge Inn on the left. Immediately
after bridge take gap L to Bridge Inn.

gap. Continue ahead pass mid field power pole. Maintain line to come to gap to R
of single tree. Go 1/2 R across field to L of two trees to find stile. Take
stile and go with hedge R to
end of field. Stay in field and go L for 30 paces to take stile R.

and fence R. Follow corridor over two bridges then through shrub, maintaining
line. Leave woods, go ahead on grassy way with spinney L. Exit spinney and after
50 paces go R to find gap, take gap and go immediately L with hedge L. Take stile into woods,
through woods, cross track and exit by metal kissing gate to find lake. Go ahead with lake L to find gap R into car park
with drive way ahead leading to road. Go L on road pass Blue Lias Inn over bridge and take gateway
L to canal. Go R with canal L and after 1000m come to the Two Boats
Inn.

Pass under the A423 Banbury to Coventry road, and immediately afterwards
look out for a small brick-built cubicle next to the towpath. Turn right
off the towpath at this point, and turn left past the cubicle to reach a stile
into a pony paddock.
