Middleton Cheyne to Chipping Warden

(W1)            Middleton Cheney is some 2 miles East of Junction 11 on M40. Facing the front of All Saints Church the route takes the lane to the left. Pass the right hand turn – Rectory Lane. At the T-junction (opposite a house named Stoneleigh) turn right into Glovers Lane.

(W2)            At the end of the lane the pathway crosses the main road and takes the unmade vehicle track to the right of the ‘footpath’ sign passing between the gardens of domestic properties. After approximately 300 hundred yards the track becomes a footpath and ends at a ‘kissing’ gate into grazing land.

(W3)            Go L and go with hedge L, follow round field edge to find stile. Take stile and go ahead with hedge L to exit by stile to road.

(W4)            Cross road to drive and after 10 paces take stile R, signpost marked ‘Footpath to Thenford’.

(W5)            Follow field edge with fence and stream L to come to field corner with dilapidated stone barn. Take stile L to stone bridge. Cross bridge and go R with fence R to gateway.

(W6)            Take gateway and go 1/2 L across field (aim for R of buildings).

(W7)            At field corner go R with barn conversions and hedge L. At corner continue on same line across field (Aim for R of wood on skyline) to and through hedge gap.

(W8)            Cross field corner to take dilapidated stone bridge, over a stream and turn L with hedge L to stile. Take stile and go 1/2 R to cross field to road.

(W9)            Cross road and stream and go diagonally R up field to top field corner gateway with track. Though gateway and follow round track, to pass bungalow R to farm driveway.

(W10)       Follow driveway to road.

(W11)       Cross road and take stile into field. Go with hedge R round field edge to exit by far R field gap. Go ahead over ploughed field to far R corner stile giving access to farm drive. Go L on drive to road. Cross road and take track marked bridle way towards farm.

(W12)       Where track bears L to farm take stile by gate to go ahead with hedge R, under overhead power lines and pass spinney R to come to previous gate opening now only two isolated gate posts. Through opening and descend field to gate. Take gate, cross over disused railway to exit by gate and go with hedge L.

(W13)       At end of hedge go ahead over field to gate. Take gate and go with hedge R. Continue over numerous fields maintaining this line. Initially hedge is R but after some while you join vehicle way with hedge L. Go for about 1 mile. Where vehicle way swings R by discarded vehicles continue ahead with hedge L to come to field end. Exit field by gap to road.

(W14)       Go ahead on road, to come to junction with road from L. Continue round road R, cross over bridge, and after some 200 paces find stile L.

(W15)       Take stile and go 1/2 R over field corner to find gate R into field. Take gate and go L with fence L to find gate. Take gate and go 1/2 L over field to mid fence stile, cross stream and stile to field.

(W16)       Go ahead to isolated stile by hedge. Take stile and go ahead with hedge R to field corner gateway.

(W17)       Take gateway and continue with hedge R.

(W18)       At field end find gateway. Take gateway and go ahead with woods L to come to gate.

(W19)       Take gate and go 1/2 R down field to exit by gate.

(W20)       Go L with woods L and then river L, ignore bridge L, continue to follow river bank.

(W21)       Where river swings L do not turn but continue line up field ahead with hedge L.

(W22)       Take top L corner field stile, through scrub some 15 paces, then take stile into field. Go 1/2 L to across field to exit by far L corner field stile.

(W23)       Go L on road to the village of Chipping Warden. The ‘Griffin’ pub is approximately 100 yards on the right.

 

Chipping Warden to Priors Marston

(W24)       Facing “The Griffin” public house in Chipping Warden. Go L to junction of roads. Go L on main road opposite (A361), with buildings R. Take first road R (Appletree Road). Follow road round L bend and after some 300 paces road swings R, take footpath on L side of road before bend.

(W25)      Make way through buildings and passageway / alleyway with fence L, over stile, continue with fence L to stile. Take stile into spinney. Go through spinney to field. Ahead across centre of large field to fence, take stile adjacent to large oak tree. Go 1/2 L, pass duck pond, to exit by far left corner gate. Go R keeping fence R for approx 200 paces to metal gate in fence. (Do not enter this gate).

(W26)      Go 1/4 L from gate with fence R to mid fence stile and 2nd stile into field, continue with R fence / hedge through gate to road. Turn R 20 paces on road, then go L take gate, and ahead to pass behind cattle sheds. Go with field edge L to end of field, R and L through gate, and go with hedge R.

(W27)       At field end, before copse, turn R then L - go with copse L down hill through gate, turn L, and then after 30 paces go R across field, keep previous line. Over stream, continue ahead to L field edge, continue with hedge on L (Watch for gateway L approximately 3/4 way up field). Do not go through gateway, but turn immediately R at 90 degrees across field.

(W28)       Through hedge gap, continue same line past mid field tree to middle hedge gate. Continue with hedge L to field end, bear 1/4 L across field to road.

(W29)       Go R and take first R turn. Before stream take gap L to field with hedge and stream R. Head across field to mid fence stile. Through copse to stile to vast field. Go ahead to meet L field hedge, continue with hedge / fence L to end of field. Go 10 paces R to find stile. Take stile into field and continue same line with fence L to take top field gate.

(W30)       Turn R, over stream, go ahead with fence left to take gate before buildings. Turn R, go round field edge, take fence stile R - Turn L on vehicle drive way to road.

(W31)       Cross over road and go ahead on lane between houses which becomes vehicle track - continue to end of track to footpath with fence either side, to road.

(W32)       Go R on road for 1/2 mile into Upper Boddington to main road. Over main road to Frog Lane, go ahead round L bend and immediately take cycle track R to road.

(W33)       Turn L on road. At end of houses pass through gateway and after some 30 paces take stile R. Go  with hedge R over bridge to R field corner stile. Go with hedge R, take stile then 1/2 L across field to hedge gap. Cross over field corner to hedge opposite then go L with hedge R for about 150 paces, and cross through hedge; continue with same line with hedge L, follow around field to exit by corner gap adjacent to derelict building.

(W34)       Go with hedge R to exit field by corner gap. Go up field valley ahead to gap in trees to fence stile. Over stile / bridge and go with spinney L, around field. At hedge gap go L on bridleway with hedge R. At field end, go through gap, turn R and go with spinney R for short distance to field corner gap. Continue ahead with spinney R to exit by corner gap. Go ahead over field to mid fence gate, turn R, pass dew pond R through small gate and follow grassy corridor with hedges L and R. Path swings R to gate with hedge R. Continue ahead down through avenue of trees and fields to road.

(W35)       Cross road, go ahead over field to L corner gate (R of buildings). Through gateway, pass in front of barn to driveway. Take stile immediately R, go across field to corner stile. Over stile and go with hedge L to corner gate. Take gate opposite and go 1/4 R, parallel with power lines, to mid fence gate, to farm driveway - turn R for 30 paces then L through gate along line of power lines to far side of field.

(W36)       At far side of field (Do not go through gate) turn L and go with hedge R. Take stile out of field and after 120 paces take mid fence stile R through dip to second stile into paddock.

(W37)       Go 1/4 R maintain line over stiles, to bridge over stream. Continue line but go to R of house to stile. Take stile to track and drive to road, turn R to main road. At main road turn L to come to Priors Marston War Memorial.

 

Priors Marston to Long Itchington

(W38)       Priors Marston war memorial stands at the junction of a number of roads.  Standing at the end of Hellidon Road, turn right and then take the right hand fork for Lower Shuckburgh and Napton. Continue on Shuckburgh Road, passing a phone box, and the ends of School Lane and Vicarage Lane on your right.

(W39)       After a further 100m, locate a pillar-box on the left.  Immediately before the pillar-box, turn left and follow the waymark down a made up track, alongside Priors Hall. At the end of the track, cross the stile and bear 1/2 R to pass along the rear boundaries of houses to exit by stile.

(W40)       Pass through two pony paddocks by stiles. On entering a larger field, cut across the near left hand corner, by stile, to reach timber bridge ditch crossing. Cross the ditch and bear 1/4 right.  The next stile is visible beneath a line of trees.

(W41)       Cross this stile, and go 1/2 L to find corner stile.  Take stile and cross ditch / bridge, and go L on turf track bordered by line trees with hedge and ditch L.

(W42)       After around 450m, pass through a steel gate and turn right following the way between lines of trees. The path climbs a shallow incline.  Just before the top a small pool may be seen in the field on the left.  Continue ahead.

(W43)       The path descends, passing through two steel gates in quick succession.  The second of these gates gives onto a field of pasture.

(W44)       Maintain previous direction across the field towards the village of Napton just visible through the trees.  On the far side of the field is a full width gate. Go through the gate, and head down to far right corner to find metal pedestrian gate pedestrian gate.

(W45)       Take gate and go with hedge R for some 100 paces to take gate R. Go ahead with hedge L.  You are no longer heading directly for Napton. Exit field by bottom left corner gap.

(W46)       Continue with the hedge L, to reach another metal pedestrian gate.

(W47)       Pass through the pedestrian gate into another large field. Continue along the edge of this field with the fence immediately on your right. Notice a farm appearing, a few hundred metres off to the left.  When you draw level with the farm, you will be at a gate which gives onto a minor road.

(W48)       Cross from the field on to the verge adjoining the minor road.  Note the right-angle bend in the road: take the right-hand-most direction, which is in effect continuing in the same direction as the path you have just left.

(W49)       After around 500m on the road, reach a junction where the major road from ahead swings around a corner and passes away to your left.  Take this left hand turn (Holt Road): it is signposted back to your starting point of Priors Marston, but this need not be a matter of concern.

(W50)       At the top of a small rise, you come upon a bridge over the Oxford canal.  Cross bridge and turn right to drop down on to the towpath, go with canal right - ahead is Napton on the Hill with its high set windmill. Follow down a flight of locks, and pass The Folly Inn on your left. Continue on the towpath. Skirt around Napton Hill on the towpath.  At bridge 111 pass under the A425 Southam to Daventry road with the Bridge Inn on the left. Immediately after bridge take gap L to Bridge Inn.

(W51)       Face Bridge Inn go L, exit by pub drive entrance, and go R on road after 20 paces go R to gateway. Down grassy passage way into field and go with hedge L. Take corner stile and go with hedge L to field corner - go R 40 paces and take stile L. Go 1/4 L across field to hedge gap. Continue ahead pass mid field power pole. Maintain line to come to gap to R of single tree. Go 1/2 R across field to L of two trees to find stile. Take stile and go with hedge R to end of field. Stay in field and go L for 30 paces to take stile R.

(W52)       Go with high hedge R. At hedge corner continue same line ahead across field. Take mid fence stile and bridge. Go 1/2 R to find stile some 50 paces in from corner. Take stile go R to corner gap then l ahead with hedge R to find corner stile. Take stile go L 30 paces to vehicle track. Go R and follow track, pass cemetery to road, pass Stockton Parish Church to Barley Mow Pub. Face Barley Mow Pub go L pass school. At post box take road L, up Mount Pleasant, ignore side roads, come to grassy passageway with houses L, leading through spinney to field. Go L.

(W53)       Go with hedge L to road (A426). Cross road and take gap to go down steps to go with hedge L. Though corner gap continue with hedge L and fence R. Follow corridor over two bridges then through shrub, maintaining line. Leave woods, go ahead on grassy way with spinney L. Exit spinney and after 50 paces go R to find gap, take gap and go immediately L with hedge L. Take stile into woods, through woods, cross track and exit by metal kissing gate to find lake. Go ahead with lake L to find gap R into car park with drive way ahead leading to road. Go L on road pass Blue Lias Inn over bridge and take gateway L to canal. Go R with canal L and after 1000m come to the Two Boats Inn.

(W54)       Pass under the A423 Banbury to Coventry road, and immediately afterwards look out for a small brick-built cubicle next to the towpath.  Turn right off the towpath at this point, and turn left past the cubicle to reach a stile into a pony paddock. Cross the pony paddock, and two further stiles on either side of a farm track. Go ahead over stile towards a modern white house in the distance with a distinctive rear projection and find field corner stile

(W55)       Take far corner stile, and turn left to follow a made up lane serving private houses.

(W56)       In a few hundred metres, this lane (Thorn Way) gives into an open area known as The Square, with The Harvesters Inn on the right. Turn left down the village road to find Holy Trinity Church Long Itchington Church.

 

Long Itchington to Cubbington

(W57)       Face Holy Trinity Church and go R. Take  Bascote Road L signposted 'Bascote'.

(W58)       Cross bridge over river. In 70 mtrs turn R. Go down to cross stile into field. Go down centre of field with river R (Ignore stile L) and continue ahead with river R to take far mid fence kissing gate by river bridge, to small road.

(W59)       Go R to cross road bridge and pass 30mph signs. At junction go R after 150 paces go L into Short Lane.

(W60)       After 40 paces turn L onto path to rear of houses to take kissing gate. Go 1/2 L to find farm gate. Take first gate and go ahead with wall R to second gate, Take gate and go ahead with farm buildings R. At third gate proceed straight ahead with fence.

(W61)      Follow edge of field, keeping hedge on R. At bottom of field follow hedge round to L. In 200 paces take kissing gate R in hedge.

(W62)       Go ahead, after some 100 paces (some 100 paces before lone tree) enter woods L (no evident pathway - this path lost) make way through rough undergrowth to find path alongside river - go right with river left to find tubular bridge over river. Cross bridge and turn L. In 20 paces go through metal gate to disused railway line.

(W63)       Turn R onto track. Walk ahead for some 1200 mtrs, crossing 2 road bridges. The track is joined eventually by a similar track coming in from R. At junction, turn R onto this and in 400 mtrs reach a road bridge. Scramble down L side of bridge to join road below (advise extreme care!).

(W64)       Turn L to Hunningham Hill (passing Hunningham Meadows) and junction with Fosse Way. Cross Fosse Way, and in 100 mtrs look for stile in hedge on L (next to telegraph pole).

(W65)       Cross stile, go 1/2 R to far corner and then R 50 mtrs to find bridge stile. Cross this stile and go ahead to find hedge gap. Through gap and go with hedge R to take stile into large field. Go ahead to find far hedge gap and road. Go L on road for some 10 mtrs to find road R.

(W66)       Take Road, pass Sunrise Cottage and enter old Hunningham, and very pretty. At end of road find church. Take gate to R of church yard and go with fence L. At end of fence go ahead 1/2 L downhill to find gate/stile.

(W67)       Take stile and go with River Learn on L, Go ahead (ignore stile R)  to water meadow. Cross meadow to take stile opposite Red Lion Pub to road.

(W68)       Go L to cross road bridge over River Learn to pass electricity sub-station. Immediately past Severn-Trent booster station take stile L. Go 1/2 L to find gate by telegraph pole to R of buildings.

(W69)       Take gate and cross narrow field to take kissing gate. Go ahead across field centre to find kissing gate. Take kissing gate and go 1/4 L find kissing gate by wooden bridge in far hedge. Cross bridge and go ahead with hedge R to find kissing gate to L of isolated building.

(W70)       Cross stile and continue with hedge on R to cross small concrete bridge.

(W71)       Follow path ahead uphill to reach waymark at farm track. Turn R downhill and in 75 mtrs at hedge corner turn L, keeping hedge on R for 75 mtrs to find hedge gap giving access to metal and concrete bridge over stream. Cross bridge and continue ahead with hedge L.

(W72)       Follow path round to R at comer of field and in 50 mtrs turn L to enter wood by way-mark. On entering follow main path as it swings R, continue through wood to exit on far side. Turn L and follow well worn track round field in direction of Cubbington village, keeping hedge on L.

(W73)       In comer of field cross tubular bridge. Turn L to follow path around field and up to houses. At houses turn left along ally way and in 150 mtrs reach Kings Head and Cubbington Church.

 

Cubbington to Leamington Spa

(W74)       Face The King's Head pub at Cubbington. Go R downhill to junction with Church Lane. Cross ahead into High street, with Old Manor House on L.

(W75)       Follow High Street into village centre, where it becomes Queen's Street. Continue ahead past shops and The Queen's Head pub to junction with Windmill Hill.

(W76)       Turn L into Offchurch Road, and in 160 metres cross road R to stile in hedge.

(W77)       Cross stile and take well-trodden path uphill, with hedge on R. Note tower block on horizon.  Proceed downhill to corner of field and turn R through hedge.  Turn immediately L and cross field ahead to pick up concrete road.  Continue uphill past house on L and barns on R to kissing-gate by cottage.

(W78)      Go through kissing-gate and down the field to second kissing gate at bottom R.  Go through and turn immediately L to follow hedge on L with tower block on R.

(W79)      In 100 yards, turn L at broken stile into field with hedge on R.  Follow path around field edge, keeping hedge on R, to pass wood (The Runghills) also on R.  At corner of wood, turn sharp right over ditch (look for hidden waymark).  Continue ahead with wood on R.

(W80)     At end of wood take gap R and go ahead with wood R to exit by corner gate gap. Go ahead across field, over mid field sleeper bridge, towards Redhouse Farm.

(W81)      Cross drive by telegraph poles and enter field ahead. Turn L and follow round the field to gap in far hedge. Cross by  railway sleeper to enter Newbold Comyn Park.

(W82)      Turn R and follow cinder path around golf course. Good views over Leamington. Follow path to Golf Professionals shop the turn R to pass Pub R, through car park to Leisure Centre.

 

Leamington Spa to Kenilworth

(W83)       Face Leisure Centre at Newbold Common, Leamington Spa. Go R, in the direction of Leamington, continue ahead making way L to edge of trees. Find path (Riverside Walk) continuing ahead to Willes Road.

(W84)       Cross road and enter Jephson Gardens. Walk ahead through Gardens and exit opposite Royal Pumps Rooms.

(W85)       Go L on road to pass over bridge and take road R (Spencer Street).

(W86)       Go L on Lower Avenue, pass under railway bridge to find junction of roads.

(W87)       Go ahead on Tachbrook Road. After some 50 yards find entry to tow path on the right hand side of road.

(W88)       Go down onto towpath and turn R (Do not go under Bridge 41). After 2 miles go under Bridge 49 and immediately take path up to road.

(W89)       Go L on road to large roundabout. Continue ahead 250 metres to find Woodloes Lane on left.

(W90)       Enter Woodloes Lane. At fork, keep L to leave cottages on R.  Continue on and over A46 (Kenilworth Bypass), forking L to Woodloes Farm

(W91)       100 metres before farm, turn R across field passing under power cables to exit field by gate. Go ahead with wall R then ahead across field top pass to L of hump to find metal gate.  Take gate and follow way-sign L round edge of field to exit by field corner gap. Go ahead with with hedge L skirting golf course to L of pylon.

(W92)       At second pylon, enter woods to left and follow well-defined pathway.  Beware quad bikes on L!  Exit wood at metal gate and continue ahead with hedge on R (ignore signed path R onto golf coarse).  Pass pond on L to metal gate in corner of field, continue ahead to wood (this marks the boundary of the Warwickshire Police Headquarters at Leek Wootton). Do not enter wood but go L with wood R down field to cross ditch bridge up to metal gate. Take gate and go ahead across field to exit by gate to drivew.

(W93)       Turn R and follow metalled road to junction with Rouncil Lane. Cross road to take metal gate, then 1/2 R to go with hedge R to follow field edge and exit by corner gap with sleepers bridge. Continue ahead with hedge R to exit by metal gate.

(W94)       Go ahead with hedge R to end of field. Take metal gate and go ahead pass large farm on R (Oaks Farm) to find corner concrete bridge and stile. Cross bridge ahead to find stile. Take stile and go ahead to field corner to find gate to small wooden bridge.

(W95)       Cross bridge and go ahead with fence R (ignore stile R to playing fields), continue ahead with fence R to find metal gate. Take gate, cross field centre, pass dew pond R, to come to field edge, go R along grassy corridor to exit by gate to driveway.

(W96)       Go L down drive, through wood, pass car park to road. Go L around Castle perimeter to come to Queen & Castle.

 

Kenilworth to Meriden

(W97)       Face Queen and Castle, Kenilworth. Go L up main road to bend, take lane L (Purlieu Lane). Go under power cables and after 20 paces take kissing gate R.

(W98)       Go ½ L up field to gateway. Go ahead maintaining line, pass through corner kissing gate to find copse at field corner. Enter copse and exit by kissing gate to field. Go with hedge R to find kissing gate R. Take gate and go ½ L via mid field kissing gate towards houses to kissing gate to road.

(W99)       Go R on road for 10 paces and take stile L to field. Go with hedge L to field corner. Cross ditch bridge L. Go through small copse and ahead with hedge L. Through next copse and go down field to find mid field gap with ditch bridge. Cross bridge and go up field to hedge. Go L around field edge with hedge R to exit by field corner gap.

(W100)   Go L up field to pass under power cables - watch for mid field waymark sign. At waymark sign go ½ R in direction of houses to field corner. Go with hedge L pass houses.

(W101)   Take waymark sign L through hedge; pass through copse adjacent to houses, to driveway. Go R down driveway. Some 20 paces before passing under power lines; at junction with drive R, go L across field (Waymark sign removed) - pass by lone field oak to cross mid field to find and take hedge gap to L of bushy trees. Cross ditch bridge in gap and go ahead up field to mid hedge stile.

(W102)   Cross stile and go over ditch bridge and second stile. Go ½ R to far mid fence stile. Cross stile, bridge and second stile.

(W103)   Go ¼ R with hedge R cross mid fence stile R and go across field centre to gateway to road. Over road turn L and almost immediately take stile R though tree lined copse to field.

(W104)   Go with hedge L to field corner stile. Cross stile and go R hugging two sides of field to field corner stile. Cross stile and bridge ditch. Go ½ L across field to hedge gap and maintain line. Cross field corner stile to ditch bridge to drive way. Cross driveway and immediately cross field stile.

(W105)   Go L with hedge L to field corner stile / gate. Take stile and go with hedge R to field exit gap. Take gap and go L with hedge L to field corner, remain in field and go R with hedge L pass under power lines to find field corner ditch bridge

(W106)   Take ditch bridge and go with hedge L to stile to road. Go L ¼ mile on road turn R into Camp Farm. Up drive way of farm, through gateway and up centre between buildings. Exit property by far L corner large kissing gate.

(W107)   Go ahead over field to go with hedge L, to take stile to road. Cross road and enter field by hedge gap. Go 1/2 R over field to exit by corner stile to road. Go R on Old Waste Lane. Take driveway L adjacent to Oaklands some 40 paces before road end.

(W108)   After 70 paces take passage way to R of driveway to passage way at end cross fence stile. Go with hedge L to corner, cross fence stile and ditch bridge. Maintain line with hedge L to corner stile (or hedge gap).

(W109)   Take stile / gap and continue with hedge L to corner field stile. Cross stile and take steps up to disused railway. Go R and immediately L taking steps down into field.

(W110)   Go ahead across short land strip to ditch bridge and continue with hedge L. Cross double stile under pylons continue with hedge L to L corner field stile.

(W111)   Cross stile and go ahead to rough drive way follow round R after approximate 80 paces cross unmarked field stile R and go ½ R across field to mid fence latch gate.

(W112)  Take latch gate and continue ½ R to cross R corner field strip and onto drive by latch gate. Turn R on driveway to road – Go L over railway bridge continue to junction of roads.

(W113)  Turn R to T junction. Turn L after 20 pace cross stile R go with hedge R at end of hedge continue ahead parallel with power lines to bridge.

(W114)  Cross bridge and cross field ahead to take stile some 35 paces in from far L field corner. Ahead with hedge R to field corner, find gap with plank bridge.

(W115)  Cross bridge and go ahead with hedge R under power cables. Come to mid hedge gap on R with stile and many way marks. Remain in field, turn L, across field to ditch bridge located 10 paces in from R field comer. Cross ditch bridge and go ahead to far R corner field stile.

(W116)  Take stile and go with hedge R to find top R field stile. Take stile and go with power lines L and hedge R. At end of trees cross stile R and go L. Continue with hedge L, under pylons and at field corner go ¼ R to stile to R of white house.

(W117)  Take stile and go down driveway to road. Go L 40 paces take stile R and 2nd stile into field. Go with hedge R to exit by corner gap. Ahead over field under power lines, through hedge gap and 1/4 L to go with hedge L. 10 paces before field end cross hedge stile L.

(W118)  Go with hedge R. Watch for mid hedge stile R. Cross stile and go L with hedge L to find corner stile. Cross stile into grassy passageway leading to back garden, keep to L of garden and house to road. Go R, after 250 paces take stile L through shrub to gateway.

(W121)  At field corner gap continue ahead down mid field toward copse / hedge Turn R after 25 paces and take stile L, over ditch bridge, into coppice and stile into field. Head ½ R to far corner of field by wood.

(W122)  Remain in field and go L with wood R. After some 90 paces at corner of wood go ½ L across centre of field to far R corner gap. Take gap and go R with hedge R. Join vehicle track and continue with hedge R.

(W123)  Follow track through two field. At end of 2nd field cross stile to L of gate and after 80 paces go 1/4 R across field to gate / stile by high trees to R of house.

(W124)  Cross stile and follow grassy passageway to road. Go L past St. Laurence church. Where road swings R go ahead through gate onto grassy passage way. Continue on passageway to open field.

(W125)  Go R and follow round field edge. After some 500 paces watch for mid fence gap. Go through gap and go with hedge L to field corner. Go R down field with hedge L. Approximately half way down field find stile L. Cross stile and go 1/2 R to find corner stile.

Meriden to Hockley Heath

(W128)   From the Cyclists Memorial in the centre of Meriden, cross road and go right up towards roundabout. Turn left into Hampton Lane and after some 200 paces take footpath left adjacent to The Firs.

(W129)   Go over stile and immediately left with hedge left and embankment right.

(W130)   Follow path round L to gap in hedge leading to road. Go R on road following round bend to reach gateway with stile to R. Go over stile and head diagonally down field to find a bridge and stile some 80 paces in from R hand field corner. Cross bridge, go half R, across corner of field to metal gate.

(W131)  Go through gate and walk up hill to R hand corner of field. Cross stile and turn L walking downhill with fences L and R. At bottom of hill follow path R, ground likely to be boggy. Path then turns L over footbridge and along quarry fence on R until reaching road .

(W132)   Turn R at road and after 50m take path to L. This is fenced with gravel workings and a field on R. On reaching road, turn R and follow road past high quarry bank on R. At road junction take path L along side of wood to find gap with bridge to stile. Take stile to field and go ahead to find mid field fence gap with elevated bridge. Cross bridge and ahead over field to kissing gate.

(W133)   Go ahead with high broken hedge R. At field end turn L and go with hedge R. Exit field by corner stile. Follow path along inside edge of wood, and after pond R, take kissing gate R, then turn L and follow fields round with wood L. Go through kissing gate and continue with hedge L for two fields.

(W134)   Path goes into wood, go through kissing gate into corner of field. Take path diagonally down middle of field and through small group of trees. On reaching the Heart of England Way turn R.

(W135)   Walk along R hand edge of field, to exit by gap to a small wood and after kissing gate turn R at road. Proceed until main road, cross dual carriageway, turn L crossing over railway bridge and take next road on R, Almost immediately, go L down Wooton Green Lane. Where road turns left go ahead into driveway of Wotton Grange.

(W136)   Just before private gateway to Grange go L to find stile by gate. Take stile into field, turn R and go with edge of wood R. Remain in field - at field corner turn L to go down field with hedge R, follow round bottom field corner to find and take gap R through small coppice with bridge and stile to field.

(W137)   Go ahead up field with hedge R to exit by  stile to field. Go down field with hedge L to find stile. Cross field with mid field stream / bridge and exit by stile. Go ahead with hedge R to exit field by corner stile. Go ahead with hedge and power lines R to exit field by stile to road.

(W138)   Turn L and then take next road R (Magpie Lane). [With a short diversion you can go ahead to visit the Saracens Head.] After white house on R, take stile R into field. Follow path to go with L hand hedge. Take stile to road. Go L, after about 75 paces take stile R.

(W139)   To round field edge with hedge R to come to large open field. Go ahead down field to take footbridge. Go ahead over field to find stile and ahead with short length of hedge L to hedge stile. Take stile and go ahead with hedge L under pylons to exit field by corner gap.

(W140)   Go ahead continuing previous line with hedge R to road, go R. After about 100 paces turn L down  farm track, following track round R and before farm house entrance take stile L to go on track parallel to power lines. Follow power line over stile to track.

(W141)   Follow track as it bears L into field and then go  with hedge L to a stile at the end of the fields to road. Turn R on road for short distance to junction. Go R and on reaching house with pond on L, turn L on path to the R of driveway. This leads to an enclosed path and into a coppice. Go through gate onto a farm track.

(W142)   Turn R along track, under power cables - where track goes R go ahead through gate, and follow path as it passes Dial House to road. At the Warwick Road turn L, and after some 250 paces take driveway R to Black Boy Inn.

(W143)   Go round the back of the Inn to find the canal bridge, turn L along the canal footpath. Continue to the second bridge over the canal and cross the canal. Walk up driveway to gate leading to road. Go L on road and turn L down Valley Lane, ignore road R, following road round and just before Valley Farm take stile L into field.

(W144)   Go R with hedge R to find corner field stile. Over numerous stiles and bridges maintaining the same line with hedges L to finally arrive at road. Go R, pass Station Lane, over railway line and then take driveway R (The Grove) . Immediately before house gate take passageway to the R, to kissing gate, go with hedge L to reach kissing gate on driveway.

(W145)   Go R and after 10 paces go L through kissing gate into field with hedge L, exit field through gate to road. Go R on road, pass driveway on R to Uplands Farm, and shortly afterwards take kissing gate L into National Trust Packwood Avenue. Go down avenue of trees to come to Packwood House. (11.25 miles from Meriden).

(W146)   Facing Packwood House go right on road pass Grove Lane and after some 80 paces take kissing gate L to field.

(W147)   Go over centre of field to kissing gate under power lines. Go ahead with hedge L cross hidden brook and go half R to power pole in corner by trees to find kissing gate leading into churchyard of St Giles Church.

(W148)    Face front door of church and go left on pathway to exit church grounds to car park. Take church access driveway to road. Go right on road to come to junction. At junction go left and continue to meet main road.

(W149)   Go ahead on main road signed Hockley Heath. Follow road round to meet main Stratford Road. At Stratford Road go left and cross road and walk ahead to come to The Wharf Tavern.

 

Hockley Heath to Henley in Arden

(W150)   From front of ‘The Warf Tavern’ in Hockley Heath make your way through pub car park to find bridge leading to canal. Go with canal R. Pass a drawbridge; ‘Swallow Cruisers’ and under road bridge to come to swing bridge. Cross canal and follow vehicle track into ‘Drawbridge Farm’. Pass front of farm building and take stile to left of right hand gate.

(W151)   Go with fence L to find far corner stile. Take stile and go ahead down field to find far L corner stile by gate. Take stile and go L on narrow filed with hedge L to find R corner stile by gate. Take stile and pass dew pond, continue with hedge L to find bridge over steam to mid fence gate with stile. Take stile and go up field towards church tower of St Mary's Lapworth. Exit field by stile and go up small field to find stile to road. Go R on road.

(W152)   After 100 paces go L on drive with Llandi trees R. Follow driveway pass greenhouses to end to find isolated grounds man's shed. Turn L across field to find edge of field hedge. Go 50 paces down field with hedge R towards motorway. Find and take way marked hedge gap right  and continue line down towards motorway with hedge L. Take gap through tree line at field end to find stile to vehicle track and bridge over motorway.

(W153)   Cross motorway bridge. After crossing bridge take stile L and go down steps with fence / motorway L. At end of fencing continue ahead over bridge / stile to field. Go ahead across centre of field to exit by large kissing gate. Head across narrow part of field to find stile into shrub. Go ahead through shrub into field with hedge L and exit by far L corner stile to rough vehicle way. Go R on vehicle way down to lane.

(W154)   Cross the lane to take bridge and stile, turn immediately right and take stile into the field. Go L up field with hedge L until you come to a stile.  Cross the stile and go L after 3 paces take stile L and then go R with hedge R to field corner stile. Cross stile and bridge to go through short scrub into field go L with hedge L. Approximately half way down field take stile L and go 1/2 R across field to exit by hidden corner fence stile to lane.

(W155)   Go R on lane to reach staggered crossroads.  Go ahead on, Irelands Lane. After 0.5 mile go L to driveway to Irelands Farm. After some 15 paces take hedge gap R. Though gap and go L down field edge, under pylons to exit field by bottom L field gap onto driveway. Go R and after 5 paces go L. Walk on edge of field, not on grassy vehicle way.

(W156)   Go up field edge, watch for woods on L. Half way along woods turn R across field to go through hedge gap. Go round field edge with hedge R, exit field by R hand corner gap, and go ahead towards spinney with hedge R. Take gap R before spinney and continue a head, maintaining line with spinney L  to exit field by hedge gap.

(W157)   Go up field with hedge L, to end of spinney. Go ahead up crossing open field to hedge stile into copse. Through copse and exit by stile. Go ahead down hill, aiming to R of buildings, to find mid fence stile, take stile and go ahead through kissing gates to come to road.

(W158)   Go L on road, after 15 paces at 'T' junction take fork L and go ahead to pass between remains of disused railway bridge either side of road. Immediately afterwards take stile L to public footpath running parallel with driveway, leading round to stile into field. Go directly ahead over middle of field to take gate.

(W159)   Go 1/2 R up hill and ahead to far R corner to find metal gate and fence. Take fence into wood lined path, after some 20 paces at path junction, go R on corridor path for some 150 paces to find hedge stile R. Take stile and go 1/4 L across field to take field corner stile. Go L along hill top with hedge L and views R. At gateway go ahead down under power lines and then up to mounds hiding Motte & Bailey ruins.

(W160)   Stay on top of mounds, until descending to L corner kissing gate leading to road. Go R on road to pass lynch Gate of St Mary’s Church, over stream, to finally  join High Street at corner with St John the Baptist Church.

 

Henley in Arden to Coughton

(W161)   With back to St John the Baptist Church on the High Street in Henley in Arden. Go R. In a few yard cross the road at the pedestrian traffic lights and continue R up the High Street. On reaching Station Road turn L and go forward past the Fire Station and Public Conveniences following the road to the Railway Station. Just before the station forecourt take the path going half R to the footbridge and cross over the railway.

(W162)   Continue forward on a fenced path with allotments on both sides. (Look out for the elderly couple on your R!) Reach a metal kissing gate (taking fullest advantage of opportunity presented) and pass into a field. Go half L to metal footbridge in centre of the far hedge.

(W163)   Cross-stream and immediately cross a wooden stile and go forward along an enclosed field edge path with hedge on L and wire fence on R and into sunken way up to stile. Cross a wooden stile, turn immediately L and up steps to reach field. Go R and then forward until you reach a marker post by corner of hedge, then go half L over summit and down to metal gate and stile.

(W164)   Cross stile, go straight across main road, up drive to R of Well Cottage (take a few moments to look down old well) and cross interesting stile in brick walk to R of gate. Go ahead through gate into small Orchard. Continue forward, cross stile into paddock and cross next stile into field. Go straight ahead to two oak trees in hedge and turn L along field edge with hedge on R to field corner. Cross stile and go R down steps and L across culverted ditch to cross another stile and forward to metal footbridge over stream.

(W165)   Turn half R across field passing marker post and on to stile in hedge. Cross stile and go half L across field to cross stile in fence enclosed hedge and continue half L to a stile by a gate in second fence enclosed hedge. Go half R to cross stile and wooden planked footbridge over deep ditch.

(W166)   Continue forward to cross stile in next hedge and go half R to field corner stile just past oak tree. Cross stile and continue along field edge with hedge on R. Reach R corner and go through gap in hedge and continue along next field with hedge on R. Reach field corner and go through gap in hedge to go straight across lane and cross stile.

(W167)   Go half L through some saplings into field and turn R. Pass pond on R and go uphill along field edge with hedge on R. At top do not go forward (along Heart of England Way) but turn R to cross fence and immediately turn L to follow a short path with hedge on L and fence on R and over another wooden fence into Bannams Wood. (Note that the woods are a “Site of Special Scientific Interest”.)

(W168)   Follow path as it winds through wood crossing over a stile to pass an old wagon on your L. Continue following the winding path downwards keeping to the L as path divides. Continue downhill as the path widens to a track. A track joins from your L and then come to a T junction and turn L. Follow the track down hill to reach a gate and stile by a house on your L "Highfield". Cross stile onto road.

(W169)   Turn R and walk forward, initially with the woods on your R, for about half a mile until you reach a difficult to see way marked stile in the hedge on your L. Cross stile in to a field and proceed along field edge with hedge on your R to cross another stile. Go half L across the next field to reach a metal gate and bear R across the short corner of the next field to another metal gate. Turn L and immediately go through corner field gap. Go 1/2 R up centre of large field, (parallel with power cables on L). At brow go down to bottom of field to take stile adjacent to metal gate.

(W170)   Go ahead 1/4 L to find short peninsula hedge - go ahead with peninsula hedge on R to find corner stile. Take stile and go ahead parallel with power lines and hedge R exit by corner stile.

(W171)   Go ahead with hedge R. At field corner go L to pass by chicken battery house and find hidden wooden stile in the hedge R by a sign to the church fixed to an electricity post.

(W172)   Cross stile to track. Turn L onto track and proceed down track passing under power lines to road. Turn R and pass metal gated entrance drive to Morton Common Farm on your R..

(W173)   Immediately past entrance drive to Morton Common Farm take hedge gap R to cross planked footbridge then half L across field, under pylons to far corner to find metal gate. Take gate and go 1/2 L to find far corner field stile (taking particular care as it partly overhangs ditch,) and into garden of a large house. Go with hedge L, pass pond R to exit by a stile to L of entrance gate.

(W174)   Emerge at the junction of three tracks, turn R and walk up the hill along the field edge with hedge on R to a gap in hedge. Turn R through gap then immediately L continuing forward with hedge now on your L. Turn L through next gap in hedge and go ahead uphill passing twin timber electricity poles in middle of field. Continue to summit and go forward to reach stile in near corner of field. Cross stile and go downhill with hedge on R to reach metal gate and pass along a fenced way at the back of a pair of cottages to exit by stile. Over field corner to stile to road.

(W175)   Go R pass cottage R and follow road round to take metalled driveway L on corner by large house, leading to “The Former Church of St Leonard’s Spernall”. Pass Church on your R and immediately after Church Gate go through kissing gate (a second opportunity to take advantage). Proceed straight across field aiming for telephone pole in middle then to a metal footbridge in far hedge. Cross the metal footbridge over the River Arrow and go slightly R to the trees in front. Go with the bank of River Arrow L then into the narrowing of the field with a Leylandi hedge on you R to cross a double stile in hedge with ditch.

(W176)   Go 1/2 R across the next field to the corner where there are a number of hedgerow oaks, to reach a stile. Go over the stile and turn immediately R with a hedge on your R and a fence on your L. Go to the corner of the field and turn L with the hedge still on your R side. On reaching the next corner of the field go over the wooden stile into the next field where there is a National Trust sign for Coughton Court. Go forward for a short way with a metal rail fence on your R to cross another wooden stile. Go half L across the field towards the cottages on the far side to exit by stile.

(W177)   Pass in front of a pair of cottages, built 1913 and 1896, on your R hand side, emerging onto the main Alcester/Studley road A439 (note that the first cottage gate carries a warning “Alsatian Dog. Do not pass the gate”). Turn immediately L cross bridge over the River Arrow, pass the car entrance to Coughton Court, (which is well worth a visit). Continue along the A439 with superb view of Coughton Court to L until you reach main gate by pedestrian traffic lights. (take great care. The A439 is very busy with vehicles going far to fast.). (Now turn and go back along the A439 crossing to enjoy the hospitality of the Throckmorton Arms.)

 

  Coughton to Inkberrow

(W178)   Find a pedestrian crossing on main road A435 in front of Coughton Court, Close by is an ancient monument where travellers prayed. From monument cross road and go up Coughton Lane for approximately 1 mile.

(W179)   At T junction turn R on B4090 for 40 paces to find hedge gap L into field, go with hedge L. Where hedge finishes go ahead to hedge opposite. Go R to pass bridge and stream L towards copse.

(W180)   At copse take gap L and continue ahead with copse / hedge and follow round long field edge, at end of field continue through next field with hedge R and after some 150 paces take large gap R and continue ahead maintaining line with hedge L. Exit field by gate and cross driveway. Go ahead up grassy vehicle way.

(W181)   At end of vehicle way take gate L and bend R round base of field mound to pass to R of isolated brick building. Take rough vehicle way leading up through trees to field, go L along field edge to take stile into woodland, through woodland to exit stile into field. Go L to take stile some 30 paces in from left hand corner, into woodland. Exit woodland by stile and go with hedge R to find stile to road.

(W182)   Cross main road, and take secondary road The Saltway passing “Neville Arms” Turn L into Brandheath Lane and follow until end of lane. Turn R into passageway, through small gate into field, go ahead with hedge L. Take corner stile and continue ahead with hedge L to exit by stile, maintain line ahead under power cables. Exit field by bridge to go ahead through three gated fields to road.

(W183)   Cross road and go ahead on track to enter field bv gate, ahead with hedge L to exit by gate. Go ahead with gas compound on R to find field go ahead with hedge R until gap in hedge. Take gap and maintain line ahead with hedge L to road.

(W184)   Go R on road and follow until footpath on R (Bouts). Take path through copse until stile on L. Over style head towards 2 gates 45 degrees R (NOT the two gates in R field corner). Take RH gate and go ahead with hedge L to take mid field gate L. Continue ahead with fence R and Mearse Farm on L to exit field by bridge over steam.

(W185)   Go ahead over field to take gate and ahead to find gap over stream leading to 6 bar metal gate. Head up vehicle track (ignore gate L) to come track end gate. Take gate and pass in front of farm (Bouts Farm) to road. Go R on road. After some 300 metres, just before Waidman Kennels take gate L up grassy passage way leading to field. Ahead with hedge L to find hidden stile in L field corner. Take stile and ahead with hedge on L under small power cables to exit by field corner fence and ahead with hedge L to exit by corner stile. Go ahead with hedge L to take stile adjacent to 5 bar gate, leading through house dive way to stile to road (B4092)

(W186)   Cross road, through gate, down driveway, keep cottage on L. Take gate into field. Go with hedge hedge L to exit by stile to bridge. Go 1/2 L to pass under power lines and take stile. Go with hedge L to exit by corner stile. Maintain line across large field to find fence leading to grassy track at end of concrete track.

(W187)   Cross fence and go up grassy track, through wooded strip, pass under pylons, and exit by stile to field. Go ahead to far R corner gate and ahead with hedge L, exit by field corner gap and ahead with hedge R

(W188)   Just past corner of field take stile R down steep hill to road. Go L on road for 10 paces to find stile L. Take stile and go 1/2 R up field to find corner stile. Take stile and go ahead with hedge R to road. Cross road and take gate to go ahead with hedge L, and in second field take far L corner stile and ahead with hedge R to exit by corner stile leading to sports field..

(W189)   Through sports field with hedge on R to corner. Take footpath to road. Turn R follow road to Stonehouse farm. Turn L on unmarked footpath to go with hedge R. Follow hedge round field edge to exit by stile leading to grassy track.

(W190)   Follow track for some 150 paces to kissing gate at end of Tuer Way.

 

Inkberrow to North Piddle

(W191)   Stand on farm track with back to kissing gate at the end of Tuer Way, Inkberrow. Go ahead through double metal gates opposite and pass to L of the metal barns. Go with hedge L to stile. Cross stile into alleyway between properties to road.

(W192)   On road turn L and proceed to crossroads. At crossroads turn R into Broadclose Lane.  Immediately after last house on L take fence stile L into field. Go diagonally down field to opposite corner and exit by fence stile to R of barns. Go L round two sides of cattle shed then R to farm driveway. Go R to gate leading into field. Go ¾ L to find mid fence stile some 50 paces from left-hand corner.

(W193)   Cross stile and go diagonally L across field to far corner. Take double stile and bridge over stream.

(W194)   Go L with hedge L. At the corner of the field head through covered entrance to stile, reached by steep bank with steps. This leads to the main road (A422). Turn R on the road and proceed for about ½ mile to road junction. Minor road to R goes to Dormston. Take metal gate to field on L opposite this road.

(W195)   In field go ½ R towards R of buildings on horizon to find double stile and bridge over stream. Cross bridge, go 1/2 R up field under power lines to find stile.

(W196)   Cross stile and go 1/4 L across narrow field to take double stile with plank bridge. Go 1/2 L to mid field gate in the top fencing. Go through the gate and walk round edge of horse jumping area, turning R in front of stables. Continue past area to double stile with a plank bridge. Cross stiles and in the next field walk directly across to and through open gateway.

(W197)   Proceed directly ahead, keeping fence enclosing tree growing area to R to find stile. Cross stile and continue ahead with house to L to exit by far L corner metal stile to road. Go directly across road and follow footpath sign into field. Go with hedge L to top of field.

(W198)   Find stile some 20 paces in from L corner. Cross stile [SAFETY] into the next field and continue directly ahead across the field. In the L hand corner of the field is a fenced off pond and the stile is adjacent and to R of pond.

(W199)   Cross this stile [SAFETY] with care and proceed over centre of field towards mid hedge gateway. Cross double stile to left of gateway and continue ahead with hedge to R. At the end of the field there is a stile, go over  stile and cross narrow field with fence L. Cross stile onto minor road, turn R and walk into Flyford Flavelll.

(W200)   Continue past road junction and the Boot Inn to the Church. At the church turn L through the kissing gate. On entering the churchyard follow the tarmac footpath round to the front entrance of the church. Pass the entrance and cross graveyard to stile. Go over stile to driveway.

(W201)   Cross driveway and walk ahead with tennis court on R and house on L to electrified stile. Go with fence L to electrified stile into paddock. Pass between dew ponds and go up field with fence R to find metal gate.

(W202)   Pass through the metal gate to fence stile on R. Take stile and go ½ L across field to far corner stile.
